Love & Saffron by Kim Fay

I Just Love “Love & Saffron”

I LOVED , LOVED, LOVED this book about two women corresponding in the 1960s!  They begin by sharing their interest in food and then develop a true friendship. One lives in L.A., the other in the Seattle area. Every page either made me smile or pulled on my heartstrings. The book is like a time capsule, because the women discuss the many historical events that happen during their lives: Cuban Missile Crisis, JFK’s assassination, McCarthyism, feminism, Lawrence Welk, etc.

Besides the food and historical aspects, many personal connections in this book made it special for me. Including the fact that it’s about a wonderful correspondence which reminds me of my oldest friend in Germany and my recent correspondence with my second cousin in Australia.  I’ve also been to some of the locations like the Seattle Space Needle, Pike Place Market and Los Angeles.

This is such a SPECIAL, gentle gem of a book that I pre-ordered eight copies as gifts. Here's a sneak peek at some of the things mentioned in the book.

I don’t want to give anything away, but maybe the picture on the left will entice you.  “Who on earth could possibly feel reassured by a stewardess dressed like a chic Cossack?”  pg 72

Above right is a postcard of the Seattle Space Needle in 1962. Did you know it was originally orange?

The Central Los Angeles Library is “famous for its rotunda’s murals and massive, one-ton bronze chandelier.” Pg 79

(By the way, there’s a great book about the Central Los Angeles Public Library by Susan Orlean called The Library Book. It tells the history and the April 29, 1986 fire that destroyed or damaged more than a million books.)

BONUS:  Love & Saffron has recipes at the end.  I've already made two and they were very tasty!

Run, don't walk, to get your copy today!  You won't be sorry!
