I’m Part of the Well-Read Moose Team!


On the upcoming 5th anniversary of the Well-Read Moose, I am ecstatic to report that I am now working at this wonderful bookstore in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho.  For a person who loves reading and has books stacked and lining shelves all over my home, working in a bookstore is a dream come true.  When I was recently hired at the beautiful Well-Read Moose bookshop, I was in heaven because it’s much more than a bookstore, it’s a favorite gathering spot.

 It's hard to believe but it's already been open five years!  On May 31 and June 1 there will be an anniversary celebration at the store including the Moose Madness Prize Wheel!

 Besides the extra activities, you will always find books for all ages, gifts, food and drinks that will keep you coming back for more.

Books, Books, Books!
The Well-Read Moose has a huge selection of over 9,000 book titles in the store! We carry the latest reads and if we don’t have it, we can order it for you. From fiction, to fascinating lives, young adult, kids, and even a books-to-movie section, there are endless rows of books to tempt you. Staff suggestions abound with write-ups throughout the store.

Café
This bookstore has a nice café where you can get coffee, tea, pastries, breakfast, lunch, even wine and beer! What’s better than grabbing a nice glass of wine while browsing for your new book adventure?

Kids’ Section
The Well-Read Moose has a fun children’s section with weekly “Moose Tales” story time every Wednesday from 4:30 to 5:15pm.  The kids’ section also carries book-related toys and stuffed animals as well as puzzles.

Gifts
Throughout the store, you’ll find book-related gifts from bookmarks, to candles, socks and more!  It’s the perfect place to shop for your favorite book lover.

Loyalty Program
Sign up for the loyalty program and for every $100 spent on books, gifts, and cards you’ll receive a 20% discount on your next purchase.   

Book Clubs
The Well-Read Moose has a section with a sofa and comfy chairs where clubs can gather and discuss their books.  If you register your book club with us, you’ll receive a 20% discount on your book club reads and your books will be displayed on the dedicated book club shelf—a great place to get ideas on what’s popular.  My own book club has been meeting here since the Well-Read Moose first opened in 2014 and we couldn’t imagine going anywhere else now!

If you don’t belong to a book club but want to, you can join one or both of the Well-Read Moose-sponsored book clubs. The morning club meets on the second Wednesday of the month at 10am.  The evening club meets on the first Thursday of the month at 6pm.

  You Go, Girl! Pure love—that’s what I felt about this book!  It’s smart, witty, and emboldening! I don’t know how many countless times I cheered or chuckled.   A female chemist struggles to rise above the chauvinistic male domination of the 1960s and live life on her terms despite ingrained oppression of women.  Hooray for this feminist heroine who points out that just because women’s bodies are smaller than men's doesn’t mean their brains are!   I fell in love with brilliant Elizabeth and her support system:  her impressively  smart daughter Mad; her straightforward neighbor Harriet; her kind-hearted producer Walter, the irreverent Reverend Wakely; and her obstetrician/rower Dr. Mason. Remains of the Day by Kazuo Ishiguro

 Remains of the Day This book immediately struck me as a character study. I didn’t expect much action, and predictably, didn’t get much.  Mostly it was about getting inside a stuffy, dignified butler’s head, listening to his internal dialogue, his thought process, and his many recollections of a thirty-year career, annnnnnnnnnd—I LOVED IT!!  💗 It had such depth and insight that I couldn’t wait to return each day to see what Mr. Stevens would reveal and what the outcome of his quest would be.  I was not disappointed.  In fact, the book stirred me more than I expected.  Yes, those tears fell freely when I wasn’t looking.  It snuck up on me—all of it, all of Mr. Stevens’ days that he shared moved me in some way.   I’m not sure this book is for everyone.  "Boring" is how one friend described it as he politely set it aside. BUT I truly believe if my friend got into his Zen mode and picked it up again, he might—if not quite LOVE it—at least appreciate it.  In my opinion this book

All the Broken Places by John Boyne

  Guilt and Consequences. Oooh this book knocked me off my feet!  I have read a lot of good books, but this one was one of the best I’ve read in a long time!   It’s about guilt, conscience, our role in society and as humans.  It was such a well-crafted slow burn, I had a difficult time putting it down.     In this riveting narrative, we are pulled from one page to the next edging toward a 91-year-old woman’s secret from WWII.  At the same time a drama plays out in current-day London, with both culminating to a jaw-dropping moment.   So good!!    Here are a couple lines to give you a taste of the book.   “I told myself that none of it had been my fault, that I had been just a child, but there was a small part of my brain that asked me, if I was entirely innocent, then why was I living under an assumed name?”   –pg 29   Gretel thought the sparkle had left her eyes—her best feature. “Now they were the color of barbed wire, of rusty ovens, of smoke and ash.”  –pg 98   “My wife belongs to m
