Thunder Dog by Michael Hingson (Book Club)

 

What an amazing story of a blind man and his guide dog who made it down with others from the 78th floor of the first World Trade Tower that was struck by a terrorist-hijacked plane on September 11, 2001. He tells not only of their escape, but the chapters are interspersed with his life story, living as a blind man. We learn the cause of his blindness and his utter determination to function independently in a sighted world. His remarkable attitude brought him far in life. As a child, he taught himself how to ride a bike by clicking his mouth and creating his own form of echolocation.  As an adult, he was a successful business man who earned 6 figures. I was fascinated by his guide dog and their relationship, as well as the changing technology that assists blind people (and even more so than when this was published 15 years ago in 2011.) The book is an incredible revelation of the life of a blind person and the full life he and other sightless people can lead.

It seems like these libraries are popping up like popcorn in Coeur d’Alene!  I just found four more. How exciting!   (Click here to see original post) 317 W. Mill Ave, Coeur d’Alene, ID .  This library is awesome and my photo doesn't do it justice.  It matches the beautiful house and the topper is that the house and library have matching whimsical pine cone rain chains hanging from them! The Case of the Missing Man & Letter “E" Author, Georges Perec A Void by Georges Perec is not your ordinary novel.  It’s a lipogram, a literary work that omits a particular letter or word. This book is entirely “void” of the letter “E.” That’s right, you will not find the letter “e” anywhere (except the author’s name).  Imagine not using the letter “e” in even a paragraph, let alone an entire book. In the previous sentences I've already used the letter “e” thirty-five times. But it gets more amazing than that.  This book was originally written in French then translated to English!  I’ll say it again. It’s amazing!  The story is about a group of friends who try to solve the disappearance of their friend, Anton Vowl.  I grant you, it can be a tad confusing and hard to follow at times.
